Clinical Study of Acute Obstructive Suppurative Cholangitis

Abstract
|
|
|
Acute obstructive suppurative cholangitis is clinically distinct syndrome characterized by obstruction, inflammation, and pyogenic infection of the biliary tract associated with the clinical pentad of fever and chills, jaundice, RUQ pain, central nervous system depression and shock. The disease occurs most commonly in the elderly who have a history of calculous biliary tract disease. The disease presents a true surgical emergency. Appropriate antibiotic therapy and immediate surgical drainage of the biliary tract are essential. Non-operative management is uniformly fatal.
The following results are obtained;
1) The incidence was 2.6% among biliary surgical cases in the same period.
2) They were 8 females and average age was 57 years old.
3) The most frequent cause was cholelithiasis.
4) Abdominal ultrasonic examination was exellent diagnostic tool with clinical symptoms.
5) The most frequent organism was E. coli.
6) The complication rate was 81.1%.
7) The mortality rate was 25%.
